New Works/Old Story: 80 Artists at the Passover Table
The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, CA, asked 80 leading local and national artists to reimagine the seder plate, and the thought-provoking results are on the table in a new exhibition on view February 27 – June 2, 2009. The Dorothy Saxe Invitational exhibition, New Works/Old Story: 80 Artists at the Passover Table, builds upon the Museum’s long-standing tradition of inviting artists from a variety of backgrounds to explore a Jewish ceremonial object, holiday, or concept within the context of their own mediums and artistic philosophy.
Passover is the most celebrated Jewish holiday, commemorating a key event in Judaism: the redemption of the Jewish people from bondage in Egypt. At the heart of the home-based ritual meal (called the seder) is the seder plate, which holds the various foods that symbolize the holiday, and evoke its themes: renewal and rebirth; freedom from oppression; and social justice.
